Right here in Tampa Bay, earlier this week, people met from across the globe to discuss reforming Islam, about bringing an enlightened version to those who suffer opression and brutality at the hands of Sharia, and cultural tyranny in the form of male dominance and violence.
Oddly, Atheists, lesbians, Christians and agnostics were represented at this summit, along with some actual Muslims. Seems a little odd that this group would meet to reform something they don’t adhere to in the first place, but whatever. Also, below is an excerpt from The Times Online and the chairperson for a portion of the event, herself formerly a slave bride to an Afghan Muslim, whom she lived with in Afghanistan.
The point of posting this is the interesting, contorted world view of a feminist, multicultural, anti-Israel, anti-Western culture college professor who meets third world Islamic barbarism and, lo and behold, she has an awakening. Her shock that her radical feminist, Jew hating, anti-American colleagues dumped her for seeing, and telling, the truth is almost laughable, except that her perceptions of the menace mirror my own.
I’m reminded that the Socialist lefts attempts to subvert Western civilization and culture are being made throughout the world. This person is, or was, in that camp, until her epiphany.
Maybe there’s some hope after all.
==============================================================================
“Nevertheless, Western intellectual-ideologues, including feminists, have demonised me as a reactionary and racist “Islamophobe” for arguing that Islam, not Israel, is the largest practitioner of both sexual and religious apartheid in the world and that if Westerners do not stand up to this apartheid, morally, economically and militarily, we will not only have the blood of innocents on our hands; we will also be overrun by Sharia in the West. I have been heckled, menaced, never-invited, or disinvited for such heretical ideas — and for denouncing the epidemic of Muslim-on-Muslim violence for which tiny Israel is routinely, unbelievably scapegoated.
However, my views have found favour with the bravest and most enlightened people alive. Leading secular Muslim and ex-Muslim dissidents — from Egypt, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Pakistan, Syria and exiles from Europe and North America — assembled for the landmark Islamic Summit Conference in Florida and invited me to chair the opening panel on Monday.
According to the chair of the meeting, Ibn Warraq: “What we need now is an age of enlightenment in the Islamic world. Without critical examination of Islam, it will remain dogmatic, fanatical and intolerant and will continue to stifle thought, human rights, individuality, originality and truth.” The conference issued a declaration calling for such a new “Enlightenment”. The declaration views “Islamophobia” as a false allegation, sees a “noble future for Islam as a personal faith, not a political doctrine” and “demands the release of Islam from its captivity to the ambitions of power-hungry men”.
Now is the time for Western intellectuals who claim to be antiracists and committed to human rights to stand with these dissidents. To do so requires that we adopt a universal standard of human rights and abandon our loyalty to multicultural relativism, which justifies, even romanticises, indigenous Islamist barbarism, totalitarian terrorism and the persecution of women, religious minorities, homosexuals and intellectuals. Our abject refusal to judge between civilisation and barbarism, and between enlightened rationalism and theocratic fundamentalism, endangers and condemns the victims of Islamic tyranny.”

The whole article was eye opening. It was as if she had been kidnapped by her husband. Hopefully views like hers will be widely published.
Poor reasoning from the Left doesn’t surprise me, but their support of Islam is beyond comprehension.

I went to Ohio State… In classes like cultural anthropologie, and cultural aesthetics… we had the word “ethnocentric” pounded heavily and repetivly in our heads. It would pretty much be the opposite of what you are calling relativish muticulturalisim.
In fact, A R.M.ist would tend to call what this lady is saying “ehtnocentric”. Basically being ethnocentric was considered egotistical, ignorant, evil… and largely was a curse-word.
It was so strange in an environment where most my female prof’s were feminists to have them explain that horrible practices such as female circumcision, were not only okay, but to be valued as a part of other cultures…. WHAT? I always had a huge problem with it… But then again, I guess I was a big ETHNOCENTRIC! Which really… i don’t think i am. I think I’m pretty understanding of music and dress tastes from other cultures… food differences…things that don’t fit under the “I’M TOTALLY OPRESSING A GROUP OF PEOPLE” catagory. But if they fit in that catagory… i’m not afraid to say that is downright evil.
Major Props to this woman for not being afraid to speak the truth in her circle of pretencious intelligencia.

“Multicultural relativism” - doesn’t it just roll off the tongue? I love words with far too many syllables.
I guess we should also applaud Skinheads and KKK members for participating in the rites of their culture, to follow the reasoning of the elitists.
And there’s no question that David Karesh established a culture in which all of the females living in his compound were valid objects of his sexual attention, regardless of age. We should be ashamed that the ATF brought an untimely demise to that culture.
Ugh. I’m even making myself queasy.

Hi Neil,
Considering the Left has a stranglehold on academia, media and the Democratic party, subverting American interests and the nation seems to be fully underway. Turning out grads with an interest in and allegiance to their own pocketbooks first, then whatever pigeonhole group they identify with, and then any group that works to heel American hegemony and growth leads to this strange coalition.
Try reasoning with fellow bloggers who insist on American evilness and believe that, by design, America works to dominate, exploit and subdue people around the world for profit, period. Kind of 60’s radical, don’t you think?
People I’ve spoken with are almost always young, recently educated and open to anything anti-American. Rooting on destruction from any quarter, including terrorists, makes consistent sense.
Were America to fall into Sharia rule, which I doubt, where would the Left’s supporters be? In permanent dhimmi status, puppets to the mullahs. And, they don’t seem to mind.

Hi Mommy,
It takes character to see thing’s for what they are, and not how you’d like them to be, and describe them as such. Well done.
I reiterate, socialist Left professors and academia in general poison young minds year after year, sending grads out into the country unsure about their national identity, it’s value or whether or not America is worth fighting for.
How long can this nation be sustained with it’s future leaders in such a confused, double minded state?
Not much longer I say, if it’s not exposed, stopped and rooted out.

Thanks Hank,
You know what was interesting there (ohio state) though? I was in a lot of classes where kids were more concerned about partying than really thinking… so I stood out to the teachers and was asked to T.A. (teachers assistant) 2 different times (even though i held such opposite beliefs!). The one was even the Cultural Aesthetics class! HA! My prof knew that I had severe disagreements with her point of view on ethnocentricity (not every aspect, just the moral aspects). I always thought that was rather ironic… but consistant with her worldview, her acceptance of differnt view points- i suppose she had to accept mine.
The same with my my Thematic Lit Prof. She didn’t ask me to T.A. (i was not a lit major), but she did ask me to join her post modern lit. grad class as an audit because she wanted my point of view in the discussion. I was flattered, but wanted to graduate and not add such a huge course to my already hefty loaded schedule. I think she was surprised that the student most interested in the one Post-modern themed book we did in that class… was an avid disbeliever in it. (the book was White Noise).

When you elevate anything above human dignity - multiculturalism included - then human dignity is inevitably devalued, and, through the normal mechanisms of society, lost.
As the documentary, “Islam: What the West Needs to Know,” said so brilliantly and succiently: “Multiculturalism is not worth dying for.”

Hi Scrap,
Your right. Anytime an idea takes 10 syllables to relay, it should be denounced as an intelligencia laden commie plot and discarded.
If only I were King…

Hi Bridget,
As usual, you cut right to the heart of the matter.
An America not worth dying for is being taught to our children daily, promoted by the MSM, at all levels, and needs to be stopped.

Hi Mommy,
I believe part of the richness we enjoy as Americans is our multiethnic variety and all that entails. Ethnocentric seems like one more label to add to the white mans burden, and falsely so.
If there were multicultural teachings that were of some general benefit toward better understanding of diverse cultures, great. But, it doesn’t stop there. It’s used to degrade and demean American accomplishment, capitalism in general and the nations ideals in particular.
At least the one prof respected your opinion and was consistent. As you point out, your dissent would have added a great deal to the second profs class, although I haven’t read White Noise. It’s all the rage with the young leftists on wordpress tho, there’s even a blog named White Noise Insanity, fitting I’m sure.

It’s a shame what happened to Bangladesh. I hope the world steps up and helps them.
