Newsweek, 1975, insists politicians, reluctant to thrust the nation into massive, life altering measures at great expense, were reticent and irresponsible for ignoring the “grim reality” of the coming GLOBAL ICE AGE.
Simple mistake? Only too human miscalculations? Hardly.
The same crowd that brought us death and destruction by overpopulation, starvation, resource depletion, pollution and the ice age now shift the current end of the world scenario to global warming, with melting glaciers, catastrophic floods, massive hurricanes and deserts where none existed before.
Do you see a pattern here?
Info update: Here is the timeline for climate changes and much more
============================================================================
You’ll often hear the left lecture about the importance of dissent in a free society.
Why not give it a whirl?
Start by challenging global warming hysteria next time you’re at a LoDo cocktail party and see what happens.
Admittedly, I possess virtually no expertise in science. That puts me in exactly the same position as most dogmatic environmentalists who want to craft public policy around global warming fears.
The only inconvenient truth about global warming, contends Colorado State University’s Bill Gray, is that a genuine debate has never actually taken place. Hundreds of scientists, many of them prominent in the field, agree.
Gray is perhaps the world’s foremost hurricane expert. His Tropical Storm Forecast sets the standard. Yet, his criticism of the global warming “hoax” makes him an outcast.
“They’ve been brainwashing us for 20 years,” Gray says. “Starting with the nuclear winter and now with the global warming. This scare will also run its course. In 15-20 years, we’ll look back and see what a hoax this was.”
Gray directs me to a 1975 Newsweek article that whipped up a different fear: a coming ice age.
“Climatologists,” reads the piece, “are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change. … The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality.”
Thank God they did nothing. Imagine how warm we’d be?
Another highly respected climatologist, Roger Pielke Sr. at the University of Colorado, is also skeptical.
Pielke contends there isn’t enough intellectual diversity in the debate. He claims a few vocal individuals are quoted “over and over” again, when in fact there are a variety of opinions.
I ask him: How do we fix the public perception that the debate is over?
“Quite frankly,” says Pielke, who runs the Climate Science Weblog (climatesci.atmos.colostate.edu), “I think the media is in the ideal position to do that. If the media honestly presented the views out there, which they rarely do, things would change. There aren’t just two sides here. There are a range of opinions on this issue. A lot of scientists out there that are very capable of presenting other views are not being heard.”
Al Gore (not a scientist) has definitely been heard – and heard and heard. His documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth,” is so important, in fact, that Gore crisscrosses the nation destroying the atmosphere just to tell us about it.
“Let’s just say a crowd of baby boomers and yuppies have hijacked this thing,” Gray says. “It’s about politics. Very few people have experience with some real data. I think that there is so much general lack of knowledge on this. I’ve been at this over 50 years down in the trenches working, thinking and teaching.”
Gray acknowledges that we’ve had some warming the past 30 years. “I don’t question that,” he explains. “And humans might have caused a very slight amount of this warming. Very slight. But this warming trend is not going to keep on going. My belief is that three, four years from now, the globe will start to cool again, as it did from the middle ’40s to the middle ’70s.”
Both Gray and Pielke say there are many younger scientists who voice their concerns about global warming hysteria privately but would never jeopardize their careers by speaking up.
“Plenty of young people tell me they don’t believe it,” he says. “But they won’t touch this at all. If they’re smart, they’ll say: ‘I’m going to let this run its course.’ It’s a sort of mild McCarthyism. I just believe in telling the truth the best I can. I was brought up that way.”
So next time you’re with some progressive friends, dissent. Tell ‘em you’re not sold on this global warming stuff.
Back away slowly. You’ll probably be called a fascist.
Don’t worry, you’re not. A true fascist is anyone who wants to take away my air conditioning or force me to ride a bike.

I think you’re on to something here.
Let’s approach this scientifically….and plot the disaster campaigns against Dow Jones Ave., political party in WH, political party in House, political party in Senate.
For instance in 1975 when we were on the threshold of a nuclear winter…in Jan75 DJ Close=703.690 and Dec75 DJ Close=852.410, Gerald Ford (Rep.) was President, and US House and Senate both had Dem majorities.
And here were are in early 2007, DJ headed higher, GOP in WH, Dems majority in US House and Senate.
Hmmmmmm?

There are so many good reasons to move to cleaner technology and energy solutions, why play the victim? A lot of people outside the US are really bored with hearing US politics all of the time on this issue instead of progress. I have 3 kids and we all get by nicely living in the inner city and relying on public transport. I haven’t got rid of my airconditioner but I don’t push the thermostat. If citizens of the US would just take a look and see that they could be less greedy with their use of polluting and non renewable natural resources instead of argueing with each other about politics I doubt that would hurt anyone? The rest of the world is leaving you behind…

Hi i,
Good post. I had forgotten about the nuclear winter option.
co, cool! The Brit is a statistics freak, I’ll make sure he reads that.
Karen, the key here is the concept of freedom. The liberals aren’t trying to convince people to live like you are choosing to; they are trying to force people to degrade their lives so they can feel good about themselves. Oh, and snatch political power while they are at it.

“So next time you’re with some progressive friends, dissent. Tell ‘em you’re not sold on this global warming stuff.

That is such the truth. I have just been waiting for this whole thing to blow over, but I was amazed the other day when one of my professors started the class by demanding that everyone go see Gore’s movie. The class is about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, so this is completely and absolutely irrelevent. I think he said something like, “No matter what your politics are, no matter what you think about any other issue or even about the guy who may have his own political motives in supporting this movie (Gore), you have got to go see it because it is the problem of your generation.” Or something ridiculous to that effect. Insanity!

Hi Karen,
Even Americans eyes begin to glaze over with the ongoing politicization of everything imaginable. Your boredom with the constant bickering is shared by us, too.
I remind myself that we suffer this in order to eventually reach concensus and avoid the third world option of arming ourselves and begin shooting our opponents to have our way.
The popular attitude, which you apparently share, that American’s are just plain “greedy” in consuming energy at a higher rate than the average person on this earth, changes nothing. America, for the most part, requires this to affect commerce, generate income and enjoy life.
The reality is we depend on those evil polluting devices called autos for meeting our daily transportation and leisure needs and that’s not going to change anytime soon.
That you have arranged a living situation for yourself and your children that reduces use of resources which pollute is to be commended. To expect the citizenry of America to join you is overly optimistic at best.
The time for America to shift from reliance on foreign oil was the late 70’s, with little progress in that direction. Let’s hope thing’s change dramatically, and soon.
Thanks for your comment.

Hi Grit,
Accurate assessment, politically speaking, as usual. “Force people to degrade their lives” just about say’s it all.
One point I neglected to make with Karen was that American’s work diligently to earn the use and enjoyment of their lifestyles. The abridgement of your right to spend the fruit’s of your earning’s as you see fit cannot be allowed usurpation by socialist, nanny state types. This is exactly their goal.

Hi Tieki Rae,
Your professor probably thought he was doing you and your classmates a favor by issuing a stern reminder that involvement in the current biggest social issue of the time was mandatory for any young, concerned citizen.
Directing you to as to how to spend your money also seems fitting. Gleaning a sense of higher moral virtue for being active in a cause and seperating yourself from prior learning and training and instead, involving yourself in issues for the greater good makes sense, too.
It’s clear your upbringing and aptitude allowed discernment beyond that of the average student.
Unfortunately, the latest in a long line of exaggerated, doomsday scenarios perpetrated for the purpose of grabbing power, control and money will only fade when it’s absurdity is realized with time.
Let’s hope those who can hand the reigns of power to the controlling, socialist manipulators don’t act rashly.
This latest eco-doom foolishness is only one of a thousand cuts, all designed to wrest control of the greatest economic and personal freedom system ever devised and to implement reduction of humanity to spokes in the wheel of opressive, slavish submission to the state.
You’ve read that there’s nothing new under the sun..that’s exactly the truth.

Hi Civis,
Interesting set of facts. It seems Al used what is actually a roughly 20 year old assertion that, since global cooling faded, hyper-ventilating over the otherwise natural swing towards warming could be used to incite fear and panic among the ill-informed and handwringers of the world.
And, he was right.
When Al decides the presidency is in his grasp, and he will, saving mankind from self destruction will be his primary “mission”. Needless to say, other well positioned Dems won’t be thrilled by this development, but risk the wrath of eco-screwballs if they discount Al’s platform. I hope they’re all planning to deal with this, somehow.
Personally, I’m sadly dissapointed that my nation is replete with simple minded, dumb lemmings, all wanting a king, longing for someone else to tell them what to do, willing to submit to the latest fad cause that invokes a holier than thou, feel good Oprafied pleasantness that proves they exist, and are relevant. Manipulating the masses is the sport of politicians.
Then again, disintegration of spirituality and self respect ends with substitutes that are always regressive, neurotic and destructive.
So, here we are.

I remember when I was in high school reading what my science books said about evolution. I also remember that my oldest brother, a big supporter of Darwinian thought, was pointing out that what was being taught then in the schools was about 20 years behind where the ‘current’ research was on related topics.
In the intervening years, most of what the textbooks were teaching had been completely rejected by the scientific community.
Why does the gap happen? The people who choose to write textbooks for a living are generally not doing any real research. They spend most of their time rearranging diagrams so there can be a “Next Edition” of the book.
Sounds to me like Al is reading from a high school textbook. One that needs an update. Badly.
“Then again, disintegration of spirituality and self respect ends with substitutes that are always regressive, neurotic and destructive.” – I couldn’t agree more.

The move beyond global warming alarmism may be on the horizon. That is, if a group of scientists and former astronauts have their way. They want to get us all worked up over same asteroid that has a 1 in 45,000 chance of striking Earth in 2036.
February 20, 2007 at 1:32 am
That should have been “some asteroid.” Perhaps I should read my comments before I post them.

“We’re doomed. We’re doomed.” she said in a high whiny voice.

45,000 to 1…
Well, not exactly great odds to place a bet on.
The hand wringers we have with us, always.

Diane,
LOL
Indeed.

Okay,i didn’t fully read your article so i don’t know if you believe in global warming scenario or not.I am not a scientist either but i know for sure how global warming is possible and how it can happen all of a sudden.Once the heat starts getting trapped it will soon have a runaway greenhouse effect..thats common sense, look at Venus.I live in a tropical country and i can definately tell you guys that something is up with the climate, never have i seen such high temperatures in the month of November..never in my life. But i also believe that human beings cannot destroy Earth, they can only destroy themselves,Earth is gonna recover after our extinction.
